Young engineers in contest
2:00pm Saturday 16th March 2013 in News
AN extreme riot shield and an Iron Man-style robotic safety suit for firefighters were among the engineering inventions dreamed up by inventive young people for a Hampshire schools competition.
Hampshire’s future engineering talent, which included a group from Ringwood School, got the chance to pitch their ideas for life-saving engineering inventions to senior engineers at Motorola Solutions in Dragons’ Den-style presentations.
Fifteen groups of talented schoolchildren in Years 8 and 9 beat competition from 800 pupils across 27 Hampshire schools to get through to the finals of the Tomorrow’s Engineers “Save the Day” challenge. The finalists got the chance to spend a day at Motorola Solutions’ headquarters in Basingstoke, learning about the essential technology inside police cars, fire engines, F1 cars and more.
Ringwood School pupils won the award for the best teamwork as they came up with Firefly, a hovering orb that scans a burning building for signs of life.
