SIXTY firefighters were called to tackle a blaze at a thatched property near Upavon yesterday afternoon. The fire started at around 2pm close to the central chimney in a pair of semi-detached cottages in Rushall.
A total of 11 pumping appliances and 60 firefighters attended the scene from fire stations across the county, and were at the scene for six hours. Crews tackled the blaze by creating fire breaks in the thatch to the front and rear of the properties preventing the fire spreading through the whole roof. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is being investigated.
