NEIGHBOURS have spoken of their shock following the death of a woman who was found with serious injuries at her Amesbury home on Monday.

Police were called to a house in Maple Way just before 10.15pm where they found the 45-year-old woman, who has not yet been formally identified.

An air ambulance landed in a field behind the housing estate and the woman was flown to Southampton General Hospital where she later died.

Her next of kin have been informed and a post mortem examination was due to take place yesterday.

A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Ian Hollis, 39, who has lived in Maple Way for about ten years, said: “The first we heard last night was the helicopter landing outside the back. It was a bit of a shock I have to say. It’s fairly quiet down here.”

Inspector Christian Lange said: “This tragic incident will come as a real shock to the local community and the local Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) will do all it can to provide reassurance.

"These types of incidents are very rare and Amesbury continues to be one of the safest places to live and work. Anyone who has concerns can contact the neighbourhood policing team via 101.”

The investigation will be led by the Major Crime Investigation Team under Operation Brunel.

The Major Crime Investigation Team supported by uniformed colleagues will be carrying out inquiries in the area and anyone who has information is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101.
