A MAN has been charged with murder following the death of a woman in Amesbury.

James Roy Simister, 49, of Maple Way, Amesbury was arrested on Monday after police were called the road just before 10pm where they found the 45-year-old woman with serious stab wounds to her neck.

An air ambulance landed in a field behind the housing estate and the woman was flown to Southampton General Hospital where she later died.

The woman has not yet been formally identified but her next of kin have been informed and a post mortem examination was due to take place yesterday.

The murder inquiry is being led by the Major Crime Investigation Team under Operation Brunel.

The Major Crime Investigation Team supported by uniformed colleagues will be carrying out inquiries in the area and anyone who has information is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101.
