A MAN has been bailed following a fatal collision involving an ambulance and a car in the New Forest.

The 25-year-old, from Brockenhurst, was arrested in connection with the incident on the A337 yesterday morning.

He was bailed until July 29.

The man, who was driving a blue Seat Alhambra, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care and attention.

The car and the ambulance were heading north on Lyndhurst Road, towards Lyndhurst, when the collision happened at around 9.35am.

The ambulance left the road and collided with a tree.

Officers have yet to establish how the incident occurred.

The driver, a 42-year-old female ambulance technician, and the patient, an 88-year-old man, were pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unlikely the identities of those who died will be released until Tuesday at the earliest, according to police.

A male crew member and a male relative of the patient were taken to Southampton General Hospital and remain in a serious condition.

The road was closed until around 5pm as investigators carried out a full search of the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision and would like to hear form anyone who saw what happened or saw either vehicle in the Lymington or Brockenhurst areas prior to the incident.
