THERE are two types of business owners. Those who say ‘they can’ and take action, and those who say ‘they wish’ and dream, taking no action.

You won’t move forward while standing still and dreaming.

Maybe you have signed up to motivational quotes on facebook (actually you have probably signed up to many of them as they can be quite obsessive) and have dreams of far off places and working a four-hour week (look up Tim Ferriss on Google who talks about the four-hour work week).

You are quite possibly still struggling in your business; the chances are you are just a consumer of all this information and not taking any action other than reading. Take a minute to think about how this is moving you forward to achieving your dreams and goals.

Although I regularly learn and up skill, in recent times I try to live by the mantra Create not Consume.

Why? Because this means I am always moving forward with my business, not standing still. Imagine this scenario - you have a quiet day, so what do you decide to do? You recently met someone at a networking meeting who said they found a great website with industry blogs on it, and it is worth a good read, so you have some spare time and you decide to sit down and read the blogs (does this sound familiar?).

As you are reading the blogs you realise that you know all the information within it, and find yourself wishing you had time to write a great blog.

Or, how about this one: You decide that you need to take time out from your day so log on to YouTube and look up educational clips about your industry. Quite possibly a couple of hours could fly by while you are consuming all this information. You feel like you are being productive because you think you are learning.

However, as I said at the beginning, the only way to move forward is to achieve something. Reinforcing your knowledge is not achieving something, but standing still. Instead of reading blogs, write them.

You have the knowledge and you need to share it with your potential customers.

Instead of looking up other people’s YouTube channels, create your own.

Instead of reading industry books, write one. If you live by Create not Consume, you will move your business forward - quickly. It is a simple concept, but it works. Stick a post-it note on your computer now to remind you, and be a creator (leader) not a consumer (follower).
