Mere gears up for carnival
BINGO, quiz, film and comedy nights are all part of the Mere Carnival line-up this year.
The programme of events kicks off on September 6 with carnival bingo at the Grove Building from 7.45pm.
The quiz night is being held at the same venue on September 10, and on both evenings there will be a raffle and refreshments.
Comedy film Robot and Frank (12A) is being shown at the lecture hall on September 12 from 7.30pm and there will be a comedy night at The Walnut Tree Inn from 7pm on September 13.
Tickets for the comedy night cost £20 per person to include a main course. The carnival day is on September 14 with face-painting at the town clock between 10.30am and noon, and 2pm and 4pm.
There will also be a stilt walker, barrel organs and horse and wagon rides throughout the afternoon, weather permitting.
The children’s fancy dress procession will assemble at Mere School at 2pm for judging at 2.15pm and it will head to the square for 3pm, led by the carnival princess, band and majorettes. The grand carnival draw will take place at the square at about 3.30pm.
The evening procession will assemble in White Road and move off at 7.30pm, led by the carnival princess, and featuring Shaftesbury Silver Band and Mere Majorettes.
Entry for the carnival can be obtained from Mere Post Office from August 23. There is also a Window Oddities competition taking place in the run up to carnival week, with prizes of £20, £10 and £5. Entry forms, priced at £1 each, are available at Jeans Electrical.
