A fond farewell to Neville
A FOND farewell has been paid to Neville Chard as he retires from Bisterne United Football Club, where he was a driving force for 65 years.
The club has played a major role in the life of the former player, chairman and award winning groundsman since 1948.
And a surprise football match was organised at the Bisterne pitches in his honour.
Mr Chard joined Bisterne United FC as a player when he was 20 years old. He became club secretary ten years later.
But his role wasn’t just filling in forms and sending in results to the Bournemouth League, he also maintained the grounds and the pavilion, getting the pitches ready for weekend football matches.
And his work on the pitches has secured him several awards as Groundsman of the Year in Hampshire and the South West.
Alongside his time at Bisterne United FC, Mr Chard has also been an active member of Ringwood Town Council since 1973.
Ringwood Town clerk Terry Simpson said: “Without people like Neville sport clubs simply would not exist and the facilities and support for young people taking part in sport would not be provided.
“Neville’s service has been voluntary, unstinting and selfless and has all been in support of young people taking part in football.”
