PLANS for a time capsule to be buried in Salisbury’s Market Place have been rubbished by councillors as a waste of time and money.

The idea of burying some mementos of the time was put forward as the refurbishment of the area nears completion, and was discussed by Salisbury City Council’s services committee on Monday night, but members decided against it.

The capsule would cost about £200 and could include items of interest, a list of prices for everyday items and other items to represent the time. But an officer’s report pointed out there is already a capsule buried next to the war memorial in the Guildhall Square, which was created in 2000 to commemorate the millennium.

Councillors said they could see no reason for another one.

Cllr Ian Tomes said even if councillors did support the idea it was being discussed far too late and should have been brought up earlier so schools and other youth groups could have been involved.

The committee voted unanimously to reject the proposal.
