Fomer Burgate pupil on naval exercise
A SAILOR from Downton is playing her part in one of the armed forces’ biggest exercises.
Former Burgate School pupil Charlotte Gilbert, 27 is a watch-keeper on the HMS Illustrious, which is taking part in the Royal Navy exercise Cougar 13, testing the might of the UK Response Task Force in the Mediterranean and into the Gulf.
She said: “I’m the first person in my family to join the navy and I think it comes from my love of the sea and all things nautical. My first deployment was in Illustrious and I will be with her until she decommissions next year, so I have done Cougar before. “Exercises like this are a busy and stressful time for all of us, but after you’ve done it once the planning and actions you follow become second nature.”
Four Royal Navy ships and five Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels are taking part along with Royal Marines embarked in HMS Bulwark, RFA Mounts Bay and RFA Lyme Bay as well as a number of Army Commandos.
