Warning over carrying knives
WILTSHIRE Police are warning of the dangers of carrying blades of all sizes after a 21-year-old man was fined for carrying a small knife on a key ring.
The man was stopped and arrested for a separate offence but the arresting officer discovered the key ring on him during a body search.
He was given a £195 fine despite the small size of the knife, as it was deemed to be dangerous enough to see him charged with possessing a knife blade or sharp pointed article in a public place.
PC George Rabczak said: “This male argued that this knife was under three inches and could not do any damage. This is clearly not the case as the sharp-pointed tip and jagged edge could cause serious injuries if used in a violent manner.
“I would urge anyone to think carefully about what they carry on them in a public place as anything that could be used to cause harm could result in you getting arrested and charged.
“You might have a key ring or a decorative item you carry around with you that you would never consider using in a violent way but might be deemed as having the ability to cause harm.
“All seized items will be destroyed.”
