Mystery of the river bust
A LIFE-SIZED bronze-coloured bust of a woman has been discovered dumped by the River Avon near Breamore.
Brendon Munster was walking over the white bridge close towards Woodgreen when he saw the bust, which he first thought was a bronze depiction of a man.
On closer inspection the sculpture, which is mounted on stone, portrays a woman with a musing smile and hair swept off her face.
Mr Munster’s wife Dot said: “She looks a little bit like Margaret Thatcher. She does look a bit fierce but the head is well made.
“It is indeed a very odd but interesting find. Brendon brought her home because we thought she could be smashed by a passing car.
“We have looked after her for a week now and she is now sitting on our bench in the porch. We want to find the owners of the lady, so she can go back home.”
One theory is that thieves may have stolen it, believing it to be made from valuable bronze before discarding it after realising it was made from another material.
Mrs Munster added: “If it was thrown out of a car or had fallen from a trailer or roof, we think it would have smashed. The sculpture seems to have been placed by the river. Perhaps if thieves had taken it they had shown some sort of respect for art. We do not know, but it does seem strange.”
Mrs Munster showed a photograph of the head to Salisbury s c u l p t o r C h a r l o t t e Moreton.
Ms Moreton said: “It is a very competent and well made sculpture made by someone who knows what they are doing.
“It is bronze coloured but I could not be sure what it was made from.”
Fordingbridge PC Corinne Irving said: “Mrs Munster has reported her find to us.
“It’s quite an unusual one and hopefully with the publicity we can get this back to its r i g h t f u l owner.
“I've been in contact with Wiltshire Police and neither of us have received any reports of anyone losing a bronze coloured head.
“At the moment it's a bit of a mystery but we’re hoping with something as distinctive as this we can find who it belongs too.
“If anyone can help call me on 101.”
