Author Ward visits St Joseph's
CHILDREN at a Salisbury school got an insight into the world of writing when popular author Rachel Ward paid them a visit.
About 300 children in Years 7 to 9 at St Joseph’s School enjoyed a talk and book signing by the author of Numbers, which is currently in production as a film, on Thursday.
Ward talked about how she got into writing, signed copies of her books and led a creative writing workshop with the Year 9 children.
Numbers was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, longlisted for the Carnegie Medal and won regional prizes in the UK and Germany, including the Salisbury Schools Book Award. Ward has now published her fourth novel, The Drowning, a gritty thriller for teenagers and young adults.
The school asked the author to visit as part of its Reading For Pleasure initiative to encourage Key Stage 3 children to read for at least 20 minutes a day.
Year 7 pupil Megan Littlejohn said the talk was “really interesting” and enjoyed it so much she’s now borrowed the book from the school library.
