Strikes to close Burgate and Ringwood schools
THE Burgate School and Sixth Form Centre is one of four schools closing tomorrow as teachers prepare to take strike action.
Ringwood School, Poulner Primary School and Emmanuel Middle School will also be closed, while The Trafalgar School in Downton will only open to Year 11 pupils.
The schools remaining open include Ringwood junior and infant schools, Verwood’s First School, Trinity School and Hillside, Cranborne Primary School, Breamore Primary School, Hyde Primary School and Fordingbridge Junior School.
Fordingbridge Infant School was undecided on whether it would be open as the Journal went to press.
Parents have been warned that up to 90 per cent of teachers could walk out of their classrooms today in a row over pay, pensions and conditions.
Action is being planned by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT).
Between them the unions represent nine out of ten teachers in the area but it is not yet known exactly how many will take part in the one-day strike.
Geoff Cooke, secretary of NUT Dorset, said: “We are expecting the vast majority of members to be on strike but there's no compulsion. So far the feedback has been that virtually 95 per cent have said they are going to be taking action.”
