Car parks could provide location for new bus station
SALT Lane or Brown Street car parks could provide the location for a new Salisbury bus station according to a senior Wiltshire councillor.
Speaking at a meeting of the council’s cabinet on Tuesday, cabinet member for highways John Thomson said he was “very happy” to look at using either car park as a bus station “if that is what you (Salisbury) wish to take forward”.
The provision of new bus stops following the planned closure and sale of Salisbury bus station in January 2014 has proved controversial.
The council is building new bus stops in Endless Street, Milford Street and Castle Street despite publishing a report admitting there is “no popular support” for the scheme from the public.
Business owners, cyclists, Salisbury City Council, The Royal British Legion Club in Endless Street and local Wiltshire councillors have all criticised the plans. “It is not an ideal situation but one we have been forced to accept by a situation that was out of our control,” said Cllr Thomson. “We need to provide enough bus stops in the city.
“In the longer term we can look for another solution. We are openly working with the area board and city council on this.”
