Storm blows tree on to house
AN elderly woman was evacuated from her house in Bishopdown in the early hours of Monday when the storm blew an overgrown tree down onto her roof.
Audrey Thorn, 72, was in bed at about 5am when the tree crashed onto the roof of her home in Hallum Close.
“I couldn’t sleep all night,”
she said. “I heard an almighty crash and I thought it might have been the tree. I was shaking like a leaf.
“The police told me to stay in the sitting room so I stayed there until it was light,” she said. “I was lucky not to have the ceiling come down.”
Police, council officers and the fire service arrived a short while later.
A crane was needed to lift the tree off the building before the damage could be assessed.
People living in the area say they have complained to Wiltshire Council about the two trees outside Ms Thorn’s home being unsafe for some time.
Neighbour Terry Safe said they were last cut about four years ago but have not been maintained since.
“They are dangerous,” he said. “No one comes and bothers to maintain them.”
Ms Thorn and her neighbours stayed in temporary accommodation on Monday night while the tree and another one next to it were cut down by Wiltshire Council.
