YOUNGSTERS at Mere Pre-school have been learning about caring for those less fortunate than themselves.

The annual Rotary Christmas collection of shoe boxes for disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and the Philippines was enthusiastically embraced by the young children and their families.

Each child filled a shoebox with a variety of items including crayons, books, soaps, flannels, toys, hats, scarves and gloves and wrapped them in Christmas paper.

Jean Sheppard, who runs the pre-school, said: “We encourage the children to think about what another child would be pleased to receive at Christmas when they have very little.”

• MERE Primary School and Mere Pre-school, which are on the same site, are having open mornings on November 27 from 9.15am to 10.15am.

The pre-school is also offering free childcare for children aged two to five whose parents are going to the school’s open morning.
