Surprise party for inspirational Guide leader
A GUIDE leader who has been a tower of strength for generations of girls in Downton was given a surprise party to mark her retirement.
Ann Tattersal, affectionately known as Mrs T, has encouraged young people from across the area to push their boundaries in order to achieve their personal goals.
She has helped hundreds of girls gain all three levels of their Duke of Edinburgh awards, learn how to camp in the wilderness, take on night hikes across moors and travel to foreign lands.
Mrs Tattersal joined the village’s Guide group 35 years ago, going on to form the first Ranger unit for older girls in the area.
Presenting her with a Good Service award, assistant county commissioner Louise Webber said: “Ann is one of the counties unsung heroes who quietly busy themselves in different areas of Guiding, sharing adventures with the Guides and Rangers to make a difference to the lives of those young women.”
Speaking at her party, Ann, who will shadow the new leadership team and help when she can, said: “This was totally unexpected. It's been a privilege to help them try new things, overcome fears, try new experiences - up trees, down holes or disappearing up mountains.”
Three new leaders are planning an active program for the group which meet each week at the village’s Baptist church in South Lane.
