FOLLOWING the recent bad weather householders are being asked by Wiltshire Council to be extra vigilant for cold callers who may offer to carry out repairs.

The advice is not to do business with any cold caller, but to contact the insurance company first to check what is covered, then get three written quotations from local businesses before deciding who to employ.

Cold callers will often quote a cheap price just to get the work but end up charging much more. They do not always do the work to a good standard and in some circumstances cause even more damage.

Information about reputable traders is available from AgeUK at ageuk.org.uk/traders-list or on 01380 727767.

Wiltshire Council is also part of the national Buy with Confidence Scheme which is an online directory of local traders who have registered and been fully checked out by trading standards. Details can be found at buywithconfidence.gov.uk.
