STREETS in a new development on the edge of Salisbury are to bear the names of servicemen killed in the two world wars.

Barratt Homes, who have started constructing more than 70 homes at Riverdown Park at Bishopdown, has agreed to the request from Laverstock and Ford Parish Council for names to be used from the war memorial plaque in St Andrew’s Church, Laverstock. The names put forward will have to be approved by Wiltshire Council and Royal Mail, in case there are any conflicts or duplications. Some 11 of the names will be from the First World War, with one from the second.

Andrew Prince, Laverstock parish clerk, said, since the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War was approaching this year, the parish council had approached Barratt about the naming.

He had also asked the developer if the street name boards could bear an inscription explaining the naming criteria.

As part of this year’s First World War centenary events, Wiltshire Council has announced it wants to create a large field of remembrance, filled with small crosses bearing the names of all the services personnel from the county who were killed.

The council is also working with the Ministry of Defence on restoring trenches at Larkhill, so that school children can visit and gain some insight into trench warfare.
