VICTIMS’ Commissioner Baroness Newlove visited a workshop hosted by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon for those who work with victims of domestic abuse on Tuesday.

The Victims Forum event in Salisbury was run by Victim Support on behalf of Commissioner Angus Macpherson.

Baroness Newlove spoke to practitioners at the session and took part in the workshop activities.

She said: “This was a great opportunity for me to see firsthand the excellent work taking place in Wiltshire and Swindon across agencies to support victims.

“We need to work together to ensure that the needs of victims are put first in the Criminal Justice System, and what I’ve seen today gives me confidence that we are taking positive steps to achieve this.”

This Victims Forum, held at Sarum College, was one of a series of workshops being hosted by the commissioner and run by Victim Support.

The aim is to share expertise between those who work with and support victims, such as the police, council and charities, and to amplify the voices of victims and witnesses so organisations who support people who experience crime can better respond to their needs.

Baroness Newlove’s role includes engaging with victims and witnesses groups, local and national leaders and criminal justice agencies to build up a picture of the current experience for victims and witnesses in the criminal justice system.

She also advises the government on views from victims and witnesses on existing good practice in the criminal justice system and areas for future work and contributed to the government’s revision of the new Victims Code, which came into force in December.
