TODAY I finally see the results of how I spent a considerable amount of last year come to fruition.

Throughout a large part of 2013, I conducted research online, read a waist-high stack of books from cover to cover, travelled around the UK and some of the US, and conducted numerous interviews, to find out as much as I could about Prince Harry.

Today my book will be in the shops.

It was a strange moment for me when a friend of mine told me that she had pre-ordered it on Amazon for her teenage daughter, before I had finished writing it.

“I wonder how it will all come together?” I thought to myself. “I hope it turns out well…”

Now it is time for another strange moment - it is not only finished, it's got a cover and everything, and when I walk into WHSmiths I will be able to see Prince Harry's face looking back at me with my name on his temple.

Of course, he has military connections around Salisbury.

I discovered that when he was on exercise on Salisbury Plain, he and his men were required to spend an extra night there, which was deemed unnecessary by many of them.

It was November 5, and to cheer them up Harry popped into town to buy a stash of fireworks and then staged a display for them that evening.

His links to Salisbury later influenced him when he was in Afghanistan.

When he was undertaking his first tour there in 2007/8 and it was time to move to his second posting, he requested he be sent to Forward Operating Base Delhi with the Ghurkas, whom he had met when he was stationed in Salisbury.

There he played rugby on Christmas Day in the bombravaged town.

I found Harry a fascinating person to research.

We are all used to the column inches dedicated to his private life, but I think people will be surprised by other aspects of his character, and about events in his life which haven’t been reported before.

Just as when a chance meeting in the depths of the English countryside led to decisions he made in a wartorn desert, his life is like any interesting story – even if you think you know where it’s going, it will always have the capacity to surprise you.
