I’VE spent much of the last few weeks working in London, and since this weekend is the first of a couple of bank holiday weekends, I thought it might be useful to share some insights in case any Salisbury-ites fancy wending their way to the capital.

Walking Tours are one of the best ways to see the city, plus they’re inexpensive and cater to all tastes - from a Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, to a Shakespeare and Dickens offering, a look at the Harry Potter filming locations, or a delve into Westminster at War.

I can recommend the East End tour which covers the life and crimes of the Krays, the sad tale of John Merrick and the grisly story of Jack the Ripper.

Plus you can pop into my favourite London market Spitalfields afterwards, and wander the streets with a plump fresh bagel from Brick Lane Beigel Bake.

There is also a lot to be found along the Southbank – as well as the Tate Modern, London Eye, Aquarium, and classic films on the big screen at the BFI, it’s also nice to jump on a boat down to Greenwich for the park, Cutty Sark, market, Observatory and Planetarium.

Musicals like Les Mis and Phantom are the mainstay of the West End but there are many new theatrical offerings getting amazing reviews. I went to see The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable - an immersive theatre experience spread over four floors and exploring the dark side of Hollywood.

I've never experienced anything like it - from the incredible location of a disused sorting office, to the attention to detail, and the fact as you wind your own way through the set-pieces you feel you are part of the action.

A pretty little tuckedaway pocket of green comes in the form of Berkley Square and although I’m not sure about hearing a nightingale sing, when I was there recently a local man turned up with his pair of pet electric blue macaws.

The square is also currently the temporary home to a towering handblown glass sculpture called The Sun by US artist Dale Chihuly, whose creations are on permanent display in the likes of the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas and the V&A in London.

Or alternatively, there will probably be a Bond film on TV.
