PEOPLE in Salisbury can find out more about becoming a volunteer as part of Volunteers’ Week.

The national event runs from June 1 to 7 and Volunteer Centre Wiltshire is running drop-in sessions across the county during the week.

The first session is at Salisbury Library from 10am to noon on June 3 where people can find out about what volunteering opportunities are available in their local area.

There are also sessions in Marlborough, Devizes and Chippenham and those who are unable to make a session you can find out more by calling Volunteering Advisor on 0845 521 6224.

In Wiltshire there are an estimated 109,200 volunteers who contribute an average of 3.6 hours a week to local voluntary and community groups.

Simone Lord, volunteer centre manager, said: “Without volunteers many voluntary and community groups would not be able to exist or perform to the level that they do. These groups are able to offer many services to the local community and people in Wiltshire and volunteers are vital in allowing this to happen.

“Volunteers should be regularly thanked for their work but Volunteers’ Week demonstrates how important these volunteers are and allows them to be celebrated.”

This year is the 30th anniversary of Volunteers’ Week and the theme is the number 30. Volunteer Centre Wiltshire, which is run by Develop Enhancing Community Support, has come up with 30 reasons why people should volunteer, including learning new skills, meeting new people, finding new interests and improving your physical and mental health.
