ON-street parking schemes in Dorset will not be used as simply revenue raisers, a panel of councillors has decided.

A policy development panel set up by Dorset County Council examined the issue in response to feedback from towns being considered for the scheme.

Now a new set of criteria will be used to consider whether on-street parking is right for an area. The cross-party panel established there were benefits from well-designed schemes in appropriate locations. But they said paying for parking on the street should only be used when there is a clearly defined problem to solve, such as congestion.

Chairman Bill Trite said: β€œOn-street pay and display will not be introduced purely as a source of income.”
