Salisbury Journal: Young athletes shine in area sports Young athletes shine in area sports

TOP young athletes competed at the Salisbury Area Athletics event on Tuesday.

Youngsters from local schools took part in the event at Five Rivers athletics track.

Boys from Bishop Wordsworth’s School won all the events in the minor, junior and inter categories, while the girls minor events were won by South Wilts School and junior and inter were won by Godolphin School.

There were particularly impressive performances from Austin Lane from Wyvern College, who won the 100m and 200m running.

He achieved the national standard for English schools with his results.

And Sophie Merritt from Godolphin School achieved national standard, winning the discus and shot events.

The event is held to select a Salisbury team to compete in the Wiltshire county championships, which will be held at the same place on June 7.

Organiser Lucy Edwards, a teacher at Godolphin School, said: “It was the most amazing day and there were great performances and lots of individual achievements.

“We had tremendous weather and were incredibly fortunate.”

What a surprise, my original comment was taken off. I would like to reiterate that this article is incorrect. Bishops Wordsworth di not win all the events. Many of the local Schools including St Josephs and St Edmunds won events. This should of been a chance for a local paper to celebrate it's local Schools achievements, not snub them. Shame on you Salisbury Journal (WHITEWASH the truth)
