20mph speed limit supported

By Annie Riddle A REQUEST for a 20mph speed limit in part of Harnham has been supported by city councillors.

A residents’ survey has shown strong support for the limit to be introduced in Upper Street, Middle Street and Lower Street.

The city council’s planning committee agreed last Tuesday to support an application to Wiltshire Council, which is the highway authority.

Cllr Ian Tomes, who carried out the survey with colleague Patricia Fagan, said: “We got about 100 replies of which 70 per cent were in favour of a 20mph limit.

“The reasons people gave were that there are several blind spots, children, dog walkers and old people walking where there is no footpath, and there are often ducks in the road.”

The pair carried out a similar survey around Shady Bower, Milford Mill Road and Manor Farm Road, which was also backed by the committee.

Wiltshire Council’s area boards have to evaluate all the requests put forward and each can choose two a year to be implemented.

Councils can introduce all the speed limits they like, but if they are not enforced then it makes a mockery of them.

The 30 mph limit on the main A3094 through Harnham is overwhelmingly ignored.

As an experienced road user,I cycle along part of this route occasionally('twixt Old Mill area and St.Nich's Road back to Cathedral Close) and even in my very hi-glo jacket and helmet feel more nervous here than anywhere else I cycle in Salisbury(mostly on cyclepaths and side roads).
Most drivers are ok(they slow down and keep behind me when approaching the traffic islands where the road narrows) but as the previous correspondent writes, there are always going to be some drivers who flout the speed limit. But it all helps,I suppose. It might just deter some of them.

What a stupid idea 20 mph, you can ride a bike at that speed,30 mph is bad enough, keep the traffic flowing I say, not cause more hold ups.
