ROCKING the rafters at St Joseph’s School in Salisbury last week were budding stars of the future.

The school took part in Rock Challenge, an event that sets youngsters the task of producing an eight-minute dance and drama-based production on a theme of their choice.

Forty-five pupils from years 8 to 10 took part, creating the set, costumes, hair and make-up, lighting, choreography, drama and soundtrack for the show.

The pupils rehearsed for months leading up to the event and competed against schools from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

St Joseph’s received four awards, an Award of Excellence for Concept, the Video Performance Award, Raising Drug Awareness Award and the Healthy Lifestyle Award.

The UK strand of the competition began in 1996 in Portsmouth and has grown every year since. Hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of students now compete in Rock Challenge shows across the UK.

The aim is to educate young people to lead healthy lifestyles and achieve a drug free high by performing on stage.
