A PERFECT afternoon of sunshine greeted the more than a thousand people visited the annual Sutton Veny Flower Show on Saturday.

With more than 450 entries to view in the competitive classes, the marquee was busy throughout the show, while outside there was plenty to entertain with live jazz, fun dogs and gun dogs, classic cars, alpacas, traditional games and a variety of stalls.

Of the horticultural classes, flowers were the most popular entry with some stunning displays of roses and sweet peas. The show also saw a good number of entries for fruit and vegetables, and according to RHS judge Brian Messam, some ‘near perfect’ redcurrants from villager David Eyres.

There were Vistoria sponge and poppy seed and patriotic cakes, and in the preserves category there were jars of jam, jelly, curd, chutney and pickle.

The children’s class brought some biscuit sculptures and some creative modelling out of fruit and vegetables. Those taking tea and cake in the village hall enjoyed the poppy-inspired artwork from Sutton Veny schoolchildren.

The Howes Trophy, for best in show in all categories, was awarded to Tracey Strange; the Top Score Trophy to Dizzy Bridge; the All Rounder Trophy to Brian Long, and the Family Trophy to the Clark-Taylor family.

Julia Tuff, chairman of the Sutton Veny Flower Showsaid: “We are thrilled with the turn ut at this year’s show and would like to thank all those who worked to hard to make the event such a success, and all those who supported the show. It’s a wonderful village tradition and long may it continue.”
