A READER has sent us this picture of the old and new lamps in the Furlong car park in Ringwood.

Disappointed Steve Smith of Tulip Crafts said the lamps are a different style to the older design, were out of place and “more suited to the M27.”

However, after we forwarded the photograph to Hampshire County Council, which is upgrading the lamps in the town as part of its street lighting improvement programme, they confirmed an “appropriate design” would be installed.

Mr Smith added: “Well done to the council for looking into it and taking the appropriate action.

He said: “I honestly think that if the lights are going to be changed they should be in keeping with the original style of the lamps.

“The old lamps added a touch of style to an otherwise ordinary car park.”

Executive member for economy, transport and environment at Hampshire County Council, Seán Woodward said: “Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

“I confirm that we have now reviewed this and the appropriate design will be installed.

“All the works in Hampshire are due to be complete by the end of January 2015.”

Mr Woodward added: “This is part of our street lighting improvement programme which will, once complete, will see 150,000 street lights, illuminated signs and bollards across Hampshire replaced or upgraded with the latest technology in energy saving lamps and dimming controls. “In Ringwood, approximately 329 lanterns and a further 1031 lanterns and posts are being replaced.

“The new lighting will provide better clarity, less light pollution and a reduction in carbon.”
