AN ELATED family from Amesbury who met American President Barack Obama at Stonehenge described it as the “best day of their lives.”

The Raffles heard rumours that Mr Obama was in the area tonight and decided to drive round the back of Stonehenge Road to see if they could see him.

Police marshalling the historic stones indicated that someone important was visiting the area, so couple Janice and James Raffle, with their three sons Angus, Barney and Joshua, walked into a large field behind Stonehenge from the A303. It was there the Raffles spotted Mr Obama and waved to him, and he waved back.

“The next thing I knew the American president started walking up to us,” remarked a thrilled Mrs Raffle, 36.

“He asked for our names, shook our hands and asked if we were from the area.

“I said I was originally from Durrington and we’d moved back to the area two weeks ago.

“He then commented on how beautiful the area is and how I was a bit outnumbered, being the only woman!”

“We then had a photo and he said goodbye.”

The mother-of-three says it’s an experience which will live with them for the rest of their lives.

She added: “It’s something to say we’ve met possibly the most powerful man in the world.

“I was really impressed with the way he was with us. He’s such a friendly and relaxed person.

“It was the best day of our lives. It was so euphoric and was a really nice start to the weekend!”

The Raffles spent almost five minutes with the American leader before spreading the news on social media.
