Local Hero Awards 2014

A COURAGEOUS ten-year-old from Winterbourne was awarded for bravery at the Local Hero Awards after recovering from a cancerous bone tumour in his leg.

Two years ago Harry Palmer, aged eight at the time, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and had a prosthetic leg fitted.

Harry, a pupil at Winterbourne Earls School, then needed further treatment after his femur above his prosthetic leg snapped, and needed five operations over 12 months.

His proud parents Nikki and Simon Palmer said: “It’s his competitive spirit which gets him through.

“Harry always had a smile on his face and he just got on with it, never complaining.

“Something like this tested us as a family and it brought us closer together. We’re immensely proud of Harry.”

As well as having to go for check-ups at the hospital, Harry actively supports CLIC Sargent.

He also cheers on his younger brother who plays for Porton under 10s – the team his father Simon manages.

Salisbury restaurant Bill’s sponsored the award.
