Local Hero Awards 2014

A FUNDRAISER who died in a motorbike accident was recognised for his charity work at the Local Hero Awards.

Jeremy Keith McNally, known as Jess, who was killed in a crash on Wilton Road next to the golf driving range last month, stood out at the awards for raising thousands of pounds for Smile 4 Wessex.

Mr McNally, from West Grimstead, and wife Diana raised more than £70,000 over seven years for the organisation, which provides specialist neurological care to patients at the Wessex Neurological Centre across the south.

The 58-year-old, also a keen photographer, was among six nominees in the fundraiser category.

Diana collected the award with appeals director of Smile4 Wessex Neil Westbrook.

Mr Westbrook said: “Diana asked me to come along but she didn’t think Jess had any chance of winning. We are very proud of Jess for winning and he was an amazing character.

“Jess had a love for life, and he and Diana cared about what they were raising money for. They always put on a fantastic event.”

Jess had had brain tumours removed twice which inspired him to raise money in search of finding cures for others.

This year’s Jurassic Walk, organised by the husband and wife team, raised more than £15,000 and Diana is planning on organising the walk for 2015 in his memory.

Mr Westbrook added: “Jess had a wicked sense of humour and always provided plenty of banter on walks. “He always made people feel good about what they were doing. He will be sorely missed.”

David Ferris, of award sponsors Giles Brothers, presented the trophy.
