Meet Me At The Waldorf was the title of our lecture held on November 11, delivered by Mary Alexander.

“A huge part of the joy of lecturing for me is sharing and communicating a life-long passion for the visual arts", she said, and this was certainly achieved.

Her lecture was based on the extraordinary story of two iconic hotels built on Astor feuds, fortune and patronage.

Built at the height of the Depression with glittering Jazz Age interiors, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel was home to international celebrities and world leaders.

The lecture explored the intriguing story of the hotel's equally iconic predecessor on Fifth Avenue as well as the present day hotel situated on Park Avenue and known all over the world.

The well attended audience despite the dreadful weather were enthralled by the slides of the fascinating interiors, the personalities who created them and the 'stars' who met, feasted and lived there, including Cole Porter, the actress, Greta Garbo, Fred Astaire and more recently Frank Sinatra to name but a few.

The society is a member of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS).

The next meeting on Tuesday, December 9 will hear Peter Medhurst talking about 'That Pretty German Toy'.
