COMMUNITY Speedwatch schemes will be out in force across Hampshire until Sunday in a bid to tackle speeding drivers.

The trained volunteers are taking part in the national road safety awareness week. Community Speedwatch is a voluntary initiative sponsored by Hampshire Constabulary and funded in part by Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Hayes.

Trained volunteers monitor the speed of passing motorists and those found exceeding the limit are sent an advisory letter on behalf of the constabulary.

Assistant commissioner Judy Venables, Speedwatch portfolio holder for the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “The highly visible presence of these operations help keep our roads safer by slowing motorists down. We are therefore very keen to hear from members of the public who would be interested in setting up a scheme.

“The commissioner has funding available to help support the setting up of new schemes.”

She added: “Speedwatch is not about enforcement, it’s more about education and creating awareness.”
