THIS was the scene when a 15,000-strong crowd packed out the Market Place to watch the city’s Christmas lights switch-on ceremony last night.
The event had been planned right down to the last detail by the organisers who were guaranteed a full house due to the star of the show, Steve McFadden.
Steve, who plays EastEnders resident hard man Phil Mitchell, was given the honour of turning on the lights.
Speaking before the switch-on, he said: “I am flattered and honoured. It is a lovely city.
“I have been here a few times in the past and loved it.”
Our video shows the countdown, the fireworks, and Steve singing We Wish You A Merry Christmas on stage.
However he was seemingly unaware of the drama unfolding behind the big screen as fireworks malfunctioned, raining down on the crowd below.
