TWO grammar schools in Salisbury have both scored in the top 100 best state schools in the country, according to a table compiled by the Sunday Times.

South Wilts was the best performing school in the area and was named as the 25th in the Parent Power list, which takes into account the performances at GCSE and ALevel.

The girls’ selective school leaped from 35th last year, with 86 per cent of their entries gaining A or A* GCSE grades, meaning they are the third best performing school in the south west.

Headteacher Michele Chilcott said: “The school was very pleased with the examination success at GCSE, AS and A Level in 2014.

“This success can be attributed to the hard work and determination by the students and the support given by both staff and parents.”

Bishop Wordsworth’s fell to 91st, having been placed 75th in last year’s table with 65 per cent of entries being awarded A or A* at GCSE.

The private school Leehurst Swan also made it onto the list as the 46th best placed independent secondary school.

Headteacher Roger Leake said: “I am delighted that the achievement of Leehurst Swan pupils has been recognised in this table; it is a reflection of their hard work and determination.

“We are proud of the number of top grades scored and the very wide range of subjects studied – most pupils leave with up to 13 GCSEs.”

No state primary school or non-selective school in the Salisbury area made it onto the list.
