VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help tackle speeding in Salisbury as part of a community Speedwatch scheme.

PC Simon Davies, the community beat manager for Bishopdown, is setting up a scheme to address concerns around speeding vehicles and collisions on London Road.

He believes the scheme could be a good way to help tackle the speed of motorists and highlight the dangers of exceeding the limit.

As part of the scheme, members of the community will volunteer their own time to help monitor the speed of vehicles in the area.

The checks take place between 7am to 8pm, in daylight hours, depending on the time of year.

Teams will work in pairs and wear high-visibility jackets.

A police spokesman said: “Volunteers are provided training and carry out checks using speed detection devices and record the vehicle registration numbers of anyone exceeding the limit. This information is then submitted to police and dealt with appropriately, which may involve a warning letter to the owner or a visit by officers.

“These projects are run by the community and supported by Wiltshire Police and Wiltshire Council. The schemes are only operated in locations which have been approved by police and have been risk assessed.”

Volunteers must be aged 18 or over, and will be subject to a police check.

Anyone interested in being a part of the community Speedwatch scheme can contact PC Simon Davies at Bourne Hill Police Station on 101 or email. simon.davies@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk.
