YOUNG people in Fordingbridge were given a boost after a new youth café opened its doors for the very first time.

The weekly café is part of a project for youths and families in the town, which is being run by Fordingbridge Salvation Army at Roundhill Hall.

It is open to those aged 11 to 18 and gives young people an opportunity to ‘chill out’, play games, take part in activities and enjoy some refreshments.

“It went very well,” said youth worker Michael French. “We will keep going and keep promoting it.”

The opening last Thursday attracted a few new faces and it is hoped numbers will increase as word spreads about the cafe.

“As things pick up there will be more on offer and we can do more with them,” he added. “I am very much looking forward to seeing how it develops.

“We have had some new people in and we are keen to see them come back and bring some friends. We are hoping that the people we have seen before will come back.

“As word spreads hopefully we will get more people coming in. I am very excited about it.”

The youth café runs every Thursday from 4pm to 6pm.

A faith-based group has also been started for young people aged eight to 13 and runs alternate Sundays from 4.30pm.The next meeting will be this Sunday.

As part of the project a new play café is also being set up for parents with young children and a launch date is still to be confirmed.

More volunteers are still needed to lend a hand especially to get the play cafe up and running.
