FORMULA 1 legend Murray Walker was the star guest at a buffet supper at the weekend, which raised thousands of pounds for charity.

The veteran broadcaster and commentator attended the event at Fordingbridge Town Hall to raise money for the Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit Campaign.

He told the Journal he wanted to support the appeal to raise £750,000 for a dedicated breast care unit because he was anxious to see Salisbury District's Hospital's cancer facilities improved as much as possible.

He said: “My wife had breast cancer 23 years ago and I also have cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“If it wasn't for the superb medical care which exists in the Salisbury area, namely Salisbury District Hospital, my wife wouldn't be here and I don't know whether I would or not.

“When you read about the problems with hospitals in other areas, you realise how lucky we are – if I had to be in hospital somewhere then I couldn't end up being in a better hospital.

“I wanted to give a hand in the fundraising because they need a breast cancer unit.”

The event on Saturday evening was organised by Arlene Wiseman who moved down to Fordingbridge from Solihull nine years ago.

She said: “I went through the system at Salisbury with breast cancer and they were so wonderfully supportive.

“I felt I really wanted to do something to help them towards the provision of a dedicated breast care unit - it will make so much difference to everyone.

“On Saturday we raised more than £6,000 – the auction itself raised £4,000. It was amazing - a huge thank you to all those who supported us.”
