POLICE are appealing for information over an alleged assault on a taxi driver over the weekend.

Two men got into the taxi in New Canal at around 1am on Sunday morning and asked to be taken to Amesbury.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “One of the men vomited in the vehicle and the driver pulled over on Castle Road near to the junction with Butts Road.

“The man who had been sick in the car is alleged to have verbally abused and physically assaulted the driver. The other man, who is being treated as a witness, ran off.

“Fortunately the taxi driver did not sustain any serious injury during the incident.”

A 24 year old man from Amesbury was arrested on suspicion of assault and subsequently released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Police officers are now looking to identify the other man who ran off when the incident happened.

He is described as tall, probably over 6ft, of skinny build with a short back and sides haircut of a fairly light colour. He was wearing dark trousers and a long sleeved top which may have been brown and yellow.

Anyone with information on the identity of the man described or who saw the incident is asked to contact local crime investigator Anne King at Bourne Hill Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
