THERE will not be a Christmas firework display from the Guildhall roof this year due repairs being carried out to the building.

Salisbury City Council are now exploring other options for the show which includes an idea for laser pyrotechnics and snow machines.

The decision is not related disastrous show last year that left 15 people injured after burning debris from fireworks showered the crowd.

Work to the Guildhall is expected to take at least six months and the council would be unable to get planning permission at short notice to use another city centre building.

Depending on the success of the 2015 show the council will then make a decision on bringing back the firework show in 2016.

Cllr Matt Dean said: "Circumstances have forced our hands and with the Guildhall roof out of action it gives us the opportunity to do something creative."

Yet Cllr Penny Brown expressed concerns over lasers and said that bringing a well known celebrity to switch on the lights would bring larger crowds adding that she did "not like lasers".

Last year the lights were switched on by Eastenders star Steve McFadden with previous guests including Strictly Come Dancing's Craig Revel Horwood. Officers however pointed out that well known celebrities can cost as much as the display.

A final decision on the details of the show will be made at full council on June 1.
