HAMPSHIRE Constabulary is supporting a European-wide week-long campaign to target speeding motorists

Police across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will be patrolling roads where speed is a regular contributory factor in collisions.

They will be enforcing the speed limit — educating drivers about the dangers of taking unnecessary risks on the road.

Locally, the campaign, which runs until Sunday, is led by the Roads Policing unit with support from the Safer Roads unit and Safer Neighbourhoods teams.

Hampshire’s Road Safety Officer, Sergeant Rob Heard said: “Excessive or inappropriate speed has a singularly devastating impact on the safety of road users, increasing both the risk of a crash and the severity of the consequences.

"Speeding is the most prevalent dangerous driving activity and forms as one of the main factors involved in fatal road collisions

"People need to realise it’s a speed limit and not a target so it may be more appropriate to travel at a lower speed depending on the road conditions for their own safety."

He added: "Hampshire Constabulary is committed to increasing road safety and will continue to target those who fail to abide by the speed limits

"Our aim is simply, to improve the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of any drivers who speed, thereby reducing the likelihood of the driver being involved in a future speeding incident and make our roads safer."
