ONE in ten primary school starters in Wiltshire will not go to their first choice school in September.

However, 97 per cent of the county's children will attend either their first, second or third choice school.

Letters are going out this week to parents of 5,313 children.

Wiltshire's figures are similar to last year's, with 90.3 per cent getting their first choice, five per cent at their second choice and 1.5 per cent at their third choice.

This year, four in every five applications were made online.

Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “Starting school is an important milestone in every young child’s life and I’m really pleased that once again we can offer so many families the places they want. There may be pressure on places nationally but here in Wiltshire we continue our good track record in ensuring children can attend a school of their choice.”

Parents who applied online can find out the decision today (April 16) by visiting the Wiltshire Council website.

Those who posted their application will be sent first class letters today.

All applicants will be sent a letter in this way regardless of how they applied.
