RETROSPECTIVE plans for a log cabin reception at Stonehenge Campsite have been approved by Wiltshire councillors.

The cabin is being used as a reception area for visitors to the campsite, which is located between Winterbourne Stoke and Berwick St James.

Business owner William Grant said he was delighted with the approval.

He said: "It's somewhere from which we can manage the site and it's a place where we can welcome our guests.

"The application was made on 8 January and registered on 21 January. The delay in registering was due to requests for scale bars on scale drawings.

"The building was not constructed until the 23 February and was only done as we needed it ready by Easter and had full planning officer support and there were only three letters of objection.

"It was quite clear it should have been passed under delegated powers."

The campsite, which gets between 12,000 and 14,000 tourists every year, has just been voted in the 2015 Top 100 Campsites in the UK for the second year running - one of only eight in Avon Somerset and Wiltshire.

The application for the log cabin reception was called to the Southern Area Planning Committee by Councillor Ian West.

Winterbourne Stoke Parish Council had objected to the plans saying it was “very prominent” in the landscape but planning officers recommended permission be granted, saying it did not have any “significant” visual impact and was considered to be an acceptable form of development.

It received four letters of support in late submissions.

The Southern Area Planning Committee meeting took place on April 9.
