I HAVE the greatest respect for the Bishop of Salisbury, but he is well wide of the mark when suggesting that the biggest challenge facing the world is environmental (Journal April 30).

Not so, Bishop!

That dubious accolade goes to preventing the world’s ever increasing population growing even bigger : it is totally out of control and getting worse by the minute.

Closer to home, the Bishop might like to consider putting the Church’s own house in order :

- the chronic lack of vicars at the coalface

- the archaic, mindless bureaucracy, sufficient to drive a Saint to drink

- the dwindling congregations

- the ever present threat of rural churches in particular closing.

Addressing these problems would be time well spent!
