THE sixth form debating team at Godolphin school are celebrating after winning the Southern Regional Final of the Debating Matters Competition.

The event was held at St Mary’s University, Twickenham and the team comprising of Becky Ball, Miranda Mackay, Sarah Roller and Annie Smith will now go through to the national final.

The team successfully argued against Worthing College that the UK should liberalise its drugs policy before defeating The Piggott School in a debate on assisted suicide.

In both debates, the Godolphin teams won a convincing victory and they were praised by the judges for their research, arguments and teamwork.

They then went on to debate against St Mary’s School in the final debate where Annie and Miranda were arguing that voting should not be made compulsory in the UK.

As well as winning the day and getting through to the National Final, Sarah Roller and Miranda Mackay were singled out for their contributions and quality of their debating. Miranda was selected by two independent judges as the most effective debater of the day.
