TODAY will be the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) day and a number of pictures of the celebrations in 1945 have been sent in by a reader.

Mick Clarke, who is the former mayor of Wilton, was 17 when people took to the streets to celebrate the end of the war in Europe.

Her mother Dorothy organised the party on Sidney Street that was attended by the mayor of Salisbury at the time.

She said: “The atmosphere on the day was incredible, the sense of relief was something that you couldn’t imagine.”

The day included running races as well as food and drink on the street and Mick described it as a “good party”.

A parade will be taking place tomorrow in the Guildhall Square but Mick says she will be taking part in a ceremony at St John’s Priory in Wilton.
