A CARNIVAL-themed hair show demonstrated the talents of hairdressing students from Wiltshire College while raising money for the Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit.

The event, organised entirely by eight Level 3 students and three apprentices, gave them the opportunity to exhibit their work to members of the public as well as their friends and family.

Taking place in the Performing Arts Theatre at the Salisbury campus last week, the students presented a variety of creative hair styles following the carnival theme.

Hayley Prescod from the department said: “The students worked very hard to arrange this and raise as much money as they can.

“They have already held a cake sale, a baked bean bath and carried out bag packing at our local Tesco."

Students raised £750.

The Stars Appeal has raised £500,000 towards its £750,000 target for a dedicated breast care unit at Salisbury District Hospital.

Backed by the Journal, the appeal was launched last September with £190,000.

On Saturday, singers tap dancers and cheer leaders entertained crowds at Radio Odstock's Spring Fair.

The fair at Salisbury District Hospital waspart of a live 24-hour fundraising broadcast in aid of the appeal and the local hospital radio.

In addition to live music on stage from singers such as 11-year-old Josie Hallett, there were also drama sketches and stalls, a raffle and Castledown Radio's Roadshow.

Radio presenter Ben Johnson, who was doing the live broadcast, also be getting his legs waxed live on air in aid of charity.

Presenter Roger Nicholls said: "It's been a great day and has brought all the generations together.

"There's been a lovely atmosphere and hopefully it will raise money and awareness of the radio station and the breast cancer campaign."

During the day, a plaque was unveiled at Radio Odstock's record library in memory of 24-year-old Graeme Comlay.
