A HELICOPTER in Salisbury’s Guildhall Square was the star attraction at an Army recruitment day.

The event on Wednesday included a chance for people to get up close to a Gazelle AH1 helicopter, which was brought into the city centre on a trailer.

Careers officer for Salisbury, Corporal Billy McCulloch said: “This is the first time we have held such an event and we decided to run it during half term in order to chat to upcoming school leavers.

“It was just to show everyone that despite having redundancies, the Army is still actively recruiting."

“We were also informing people about the kinds of opportunities we have to offer if anyone is considering looking at a career in the military.”

The careers day involved representatives from the Army Air Corps, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and the Royal Wessex Yeomanry.

As well as a chance to climb onboard the helicopter, people were invited to test their co-ordination and reaction times by playing a sports game and get their own dog-tags made, courtesy of REME.

Corporal McCulloch said: “We had a lot of people showing interest not so much for now but for the future. We didn’t sign anyone up but we did have a couple of people fill out contact coupons registering their interest.”
